Why do we need an armed national park ranger on Mount Meru?

The lower slopes of Mount Meru form part of Arusha National Park, an unfenced ecosystem home to healthy populations of large wildlife, including African buffaloes, giraffes, leopards, and elephants. The ranger accompanies all trekking groups to ensure safe wildlife encounters on foot.

How technical is the final summit ridge walk?

The ridge is non-technical (no ropes or climbing harnesses required), but it features significant exposure. You will be walking along narrow volcanic rock pathways with steep drop-offs on either side. It requires steady footing, good balance, and can be challenging for hikers who experience vertigo.

Day 01 :

Arusha to Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

Elevation: 1,500m to 2,514m | 10km | 4-5 hours.

Morning pickup from Arusha city for a drive to Momella Gate. After clearing national park permits, begin your trek accompanied by an armed ranger. Walk past the Maio waterfalls and across open plains where buffaloes graze. Ascend through dense montane forest to Miriakamba Hut.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner.

Day 02 :

Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

Elevation: 2,514m to 3,570m | 4km | 3-5 hours.

Climb up a steep trail through the lush heather zone, following wooden steps along Elephant Ridge. Arrive at Saddle Hut by midday. In the afternoon, take an active acclimatization walk up to the summit of Little Meru (3,820m) for expansive views of the crater wall.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 03 :

Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak down to Miriakamba Hut

Elevation: 3,570m to 4,562m (Summit) down to 2,514m | 14km | 10-12 hours.

Wake up at 1:30 AM. Navigate a steep, rocky trail up to Rhino Point before traversing the narrow, dramatic volcanic inner crater rim crest. Reach Socialist Peak (4,562m) just as sunrise illuminates Kilimanjaro. Descend back to Saddle Hut for lunch, then continue down to Miriakamba.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 04 :

Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate to Arusha Return

Elevation: 2,514m to 1,500m | 6km | 2-3 hours.

Take a gentle morning descent through the forest zone via the direct southern route, keeping an eye out for elegant black-and-white colobus monkeys in the canopy. Arrive at Momella Gate to receive your certificates, say goodbye to your crew, and drive back to Arusha.
