Mount Ol Doinyo Lengai
Rising 2,962 meters out of the scorched Great Rift Valley floor near Lake Natron, Ol Doinyo Lengai is a sacred site to the local Maasai people, who revere it as the home of their God, Engai. Geologically, it is the strangest volcano on Earth, erupting a highly fluid, low-temperature “natrocarbonatite” lava that appears pitch-black by day, glows a dull red at night, and rapidly weathers to a ghostly bone-white ash.
An Ngoye Adventure expedition here is one of the most intense, steep, and thrilling single-day climbs in East Africa. The trek begins under the cover of midnight to escape the punishing rift valley sun. Scrambling up loose volcanic gravelly inclines, you reach the summit rim just as sunrise breaks over the horizon—revealing unearthly views across the white salt flats of Lake Natron, the Ngorongoro Highlands, and the distant tips of Kilimanjaro and Meru piercing the clouds.
